Now that you are engaged, you are probably busy sorting out all of your wedding details! With everything going on, it can be easy to overlook this unique and exciting stage in your relationship. It is a time filled with anticipation, joy and love—And it is definitely a chapter of your lives that is worth capturing! If you are on the fence about whether or not to do an engagement session, here are a few reasons why you might want to consider it.
YOU GET GREAT PHOTOS
Of course you will get fantastic images from your wedding, but it is also nice to have some professional photos of the two of you not in your wedding attire. These shots will be great to look back on down the road, and are also useful for things like save the dates, wedding websites, guest books, or even just an awesome wall display for your home.
PRACTICE FOR THE BIG DAY
Your engagement session is a great opportunity to instill confidence and build comfort in front of the camera. If you are camera shy or have never had professional photos taken, it is best to get any anxiety out of the way in advance. In no time, you will stop focusing on the camera and start focusing more on each other. Your interactions will become more natural and you will learn that getting your photos taken can actually be FUN!
YOU GET TO KNOW YOUR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER
You spend a lot of time with your photographer on your wedding day, and the engagement session is a great way to get to know each other. You will get a better feel for his or her shooting style, and you will leave feeling comfortable and relaxed for your upcoming wedding photos.
WHERE TO TAKE THEM?
Once a couple has decided to get an engagement session, one of the most frequently asked questions I get is, “Where do you recommend we take our photos?” There are so many beautiful locations in Chicago, so I understand that the decision can be difficult! I always tell clients that the most important thing is to pick a location that means something to you both, whether it be the park where you had your first date, the coffee shop around the corner from your house, or even in an in-home session with your pet. There is no wrong choice!
The most popular request that I receive from clients is to have their engagement session involve some combination of both urban and nature vibes. This type of setting can be difficult to come by in the heart of Chicago, but I have found two amazing locations that showcase our beautiful skyline while also tying in various elements of nature.
The first spot is the always popular Lincoln Park. This city landmark is an urban oasis with a variety of different spots for great engagement photos, such as Lincoln Park Zoo, Alfred Caldwell Lily Pond, Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, North Avenue Beach and Lincoln Park Conservatory, just to name a few. My favorite Lincoln Park location, however, is the Nature Boardwalk. This gem of a spot makes you feel like you are right in the middle of an open field in the country, and no one would ever know that Lake Shore Drive is located just over the hill behind you. And the best part about the Nature Boardwalk is that all you have to do is turn around and the skyline is right there when you want it!
Head north on Lake Shore Drive about four miles and you will come across Montrose Harbor, my absolute favorite spot in the city. Although it is a bit more removed from the hustle and bustle of downtown, Montrose provides a beautiful northern view of the entire Chicago skyline, complete with a beach and hundreds of boats in the harbor. It also has an incredibly lush and wooded bird sanctuary called the Magic Hedge, which truly lives up to its name. If you want tons of greenery, wildflowers and an outstanding skyline in the distance, Montrose Harbor is your spot!
